7 Steps To Take After A Car Accident

Whenever you’re driving on the roads and highways of South Carolina, the last thing on your mind is being involved in an auto accident. When a collision does occur, it can be an overwhelming and frustrating experience. However, there are important things you must do at the scene of an accident that may affect your property damage claim and/or personal injury claim.

The following are steps you should take right after a car accident has occurred:

  • Remain calm. Succumbing to anger or stress can hinder your ability to think logically. Take deep breaths and gather your thoughts in order to execute the next steps.
  • Check for any injuries. Prior to assessing property damage, check to see if you and everyone involved in the accident, including the other driver, needs immediate medical attention. If so, call an ambulance.
  • Move vehicles to a safe place. If you are still able to drive your vehicle, make sure you pull over to the side of the road and away from more danger. Also, doing this will prevent you from causing a major traffic jam.
  • Contact the police and your insurance company. Tell your insurance provider that you’ve been involved in an accident and inform them about the events that transpired and the extent of your injuries. If there is significant property damage, injury, or death, you must notify law enforcement.
  • Exchange information with the other driver. Obtain names, numbers, addresses, license plate numbers, drivers’ license numbers, and basic insurance information from all parties involved. If passengers are also involved, get their information as well.
  • Take pictures. The most important piece of evidence in car accident cases are photographs. Be sure to take pictures of the damage and injuries involved, street signs, road conditions, weather conditions, etc.
  • Hire an attorney. If you have been injured in a car accident, it’s imperative to hire an experienced and reliable attorney to help recover your entitled compensation.
