At Lam Law Firm, I have helped my personal injury clients recover compensation for their injuries after being involved in auto accidents. There have been occasions when the collision was caused by a motorist who had little or no insurance coverage. This meant that if the victim suffers a serious injury, they would have to pay a partial amount of the medical expenses since the at-fault party didn’t possess enough insurance to cover the damages.
Unfortunately, many of these clients didn’t know about additional coverage that is designed to protect them in the event of an injury by a person who carried only the minimum limits of insurance. It is important to understand that this extra coverage is affordable and easy to obtain.
Uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) motorist coverage is available to all licensed drivers in South Carolina. According to South Carolina Code Ann. § 38-77-150, every insurance policy must possess uninsured motorist coverage. So, in the event of an accident caused by an uninsured/underinsured motorist, the additional UM/UIM coverage may allow your case to be settled to your satisfaction. Additionally, UM/UIM coverage applies to “hit and run” accidents where the at-fault party is unknown.
The price of additional UM/UIM coverage is reasonable. If you don’t have UM/UIM coverage, I would advise you to check your policy, and contact your insurer in order to obtain sufficient coverage to protect you and your family.
